The initials UFO always held a certain curiosity for me. I had read books like Chariots of Fire by Eric Von Daniken, Pioneers of Space and Flying Saucers Have Landed by George Adamski, and watched films on extra terrestrial phenomena like War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. Yet, I would not be convinced that flying saucers actually existed until I observed one for myself.

It was the summer of 1962; I was camping on a site in Tintagel, Cornwall where I made friends with two couples who were ghost-hunting enthusiasts. They invited me, a complete novice to join them late at night for a three-hour vigil to the rains of Tintagel castle. They explained to me that the castle was once the headquarters of the legendary King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table fame. We decided to leave just before darkness fell. We took two torches, snacks and water, wore boots and anoraks because we had a bit of a climb over half a mile of rocky terrain. My friends also took an instamatic 35 mill, camera. We arrived without incident at the ruins and selected a sheltered area to take up our vigil. It was quite dark by now; the moon was just a narrow slit. As time passed I began to get restless, straining my eyes in the hope of glimpsing something out of the ordinary without success. To my relief one of the party suggested a break for nourishment, which was very welcome from my point of view.

Ten minutes later we resumed our vigil. All of a sudden a bright light shone above us. Looking towards the source of the light, I saw very clearly, a spinning silver disc. I was terrified and looked round only to find my friends were gathering their belongings. Without another word we ran and tumbled down the rocks not stopping till we arrived at the camp. Needless to say the other campers had seen the disc. They told us that the light moved suddenly at very high speed and disappeared. That was my first encounter, but I have witnessed many other sightings since. I am now convinced, UFO’s are fact.
