Deadman’s Cross is a small village on the A600 to the east of Haynes. It is, and always has been, a small village yet it has retained its public house due to the road which is straddles.

Hammer Hill

Mr. C. W. Taylor from Surrey was driving along the A600 and had just reached the top of Hammer Hill near Deadman’s Cross when, in his headlights, he saw a man walking in the same direction as he was travelling. The figure wore a long black coat which reached to its feet and on the back of its head was a child’s straw hat. Mr. Taylor decided to stop and offer the man a lift but soon regretted that decision. As he drew alongside the figure he saw that the man had no face and the hat was perched on nothing. In the next instant the figure gave out the most horrible of screams and Mr. Taylor fled in panic. Mr. Taylor later related his tale to a clergyman who claimed that what he had seen was an elemental, a nature spirit.
