General
Goldington is a large residential area which lies to the east of Bedford town centre. There has been a settlement on the site for a considerable period of time even pre-dating Goldington’s entry in the Domesday Book (Goldentone). The name is believed to derive from an Old English personal name and the word -ingtun meaning ‘farm or settlement connected with Golda’.

Goldington Hall
There are two ghosts that haunt the Lincoln Arms, formerly Goldington Hall. One is an older lady in Victorian dress that haunts the window seat on the landing. She usually appears in the evening and there is a cold spot around the window seat although there is no source of a draught. The other ghost is heard but has never been seen, she is thought to be a little girl as about every three days ‘little girl’ footsteps are heard on the upper landing. The assistant manager has often heard the sounds of a child walking on the floorboards but every time he has run up there he has found nothing. Harvey, a Golden retriever that belongs to the landlady often refuses to go upstairs and once every few weeks he runs away as if he is scared. A previous manager had a large fearless Great Dane who refused to go into the Pistol Bar area.

The Grange
Several publications printed the story about ‘the ghost of a mad gardener, who had attempted to kill a former owner of the hall, and was seen staggering around the grounds with a pitchfork through his heart’. This story was attributed to Goldington Hall but in fact the events took place at the Grange which has now been gone for some time.
