General
The village of Knotting lies sixteen kilometres north of Bedford just off the A6. In the eleventh century the village was called Chenotinga, by the fourteenth century it had become Knottyngges. The origin of the name is uncertain though it could mean ‘the knot-like hill’ or it could mean ‘Cnotta’s people‘ (from the Old English words cnotta, -ing or -ingas).
At the church of St. Margaret of Antioch cock-fighting took place during 1634 to 1636. It seems that even the clergy joined in which resulted in the Rector losing his living.

Old Cottage
It is said that an old cottage which stands behind the church is haunted but no further details are available. So far we have not been able to confirm this haunting or find anyone who knows anything about it. It seems that this is one of those old hauntings that have slipped into legend.
