General
At one time there were two railway lines running through New Mill End, one was the Midland Railway and the other was the Hatfield, Luton and Dunstable branch of the Great Northern railway. To go with the railways there were two stations, Chiltern Green station and Newmill End station. Now only the Midland railway still exists and both stations have gone whilst the old Great Northern railway line is used as the Lea Valley Walk.

Lower Harpenden Road
One summer evening at about 20:00 eighteen year old Elvena Grace was walking along the Lower Harpenden Road towards East Hyde. Her and her boyfriend approached a bend in the road so they could see the now demolished railway bridge. At the same time Elvena saw a man in a black cloak and tricorn hat riding a galloping horse. She watched as he guided his horse through a low wall which skirts an estate then he vanished. Up until the point at which he passed through the wall Elvena had believed him to be alive, after that she was no so sure. She also realised that she had not heard the sounds of hooves. Her boyfriend saw nothing.
Many years later Elvena was to learn that her mother had had a similar experience on the same road. At the time her mother was about twenty and was out courting on the same road but nearer to Luton. She too was near a bridge and the time of year was the same as when Elvena saw her ghost. The only differences were that this time it was dark and the figure appeared to float rather than gallop. His hat was also different as it was a floppy one and he carried a lantern. Her companion also saw nothing.
