General
Riseley lies in the north of the county and is a large village with a population of 1270. The village is a mixture of old and new housing as it has grown considerably in the last few years. Nonetheless the High Street is still lined with timber framed houses and thatched cottages.
The name comes from the Old English words hris and leah meaning ‘brushwood wood or clearing’. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the name is given as Riselai.

Buryfields Farm
In the 1950’s Buryfields Farm was occupied by Ken Surridge and his family. The farm turned out to be one of the most haunted sites in the district. Lamps would light up of their own accord, a pump collapsed hurting one of his daughters and two of his children would wake up in the night terrified. The reason for the terror was that his daughter once saw a door and a dark figure where there should have been a solid wall. The outside doors caused the greatest problems, even when properly locked they would open during the night. Ken even drove six inch nails into one door but by the morning the door was open with the nails still in place. Even the family dog, Spider, was affected and he hated going in to the farmhouse.

Church Lane
In the late 1970’s a local family were walking down Church Lane towards All Saints church late at night. As they looked towards the church they saw that it was in ruins and they could see straight through to the altar. The church is still not in ruins.

Eastfields Corner
Ken Surridge, of Buryfields Farm, was travelling along the road to Dean when he became aware of a sound like a horse. It appeared to plunge through the hedgerow and cross the road from one side to the other. In all the time he heard the sounds nothing was visible. There were two other witnesses present at the time and all three said that they felt the cold air as it passed.

The Fox and Hounds
The Fox and Hounds is haunted by the ghost of a nurse. The ghost pursues the usual practises of turning lights on and off, and making the sound of footsteps overhead. In addition an occasional ghostly cough has been heard. The nurse died when she was run over by a coach as she crossed the road. Her body was taken in to the Fox and Hounds but only her mortal remains left.
