Roxton lies in the centre of a market gardening area encompassing Wyboston, Chawston and Colesden. It has a population of 1,190.
Roxton has an unusual Congregational church which was built in 1808 and is thatched. Nearby stands Roxton House which is a red-bricked Georgian country house standing in parkland. At the edge of the park lies the lodge, a pretty thatched building on the main road.

The Chequers Inn
The Chequers Inn (now a private residence) is haunted by a ghost called Mabel. She shows her presence by turning on the bathroom taps, turning off the beer pumps and even turning off the water at the mains. A few years ago the ‘Bedford Record’ ran a report about noises in the pub that had disturbed the landlord. He had heard the sounds of furniture being moved around during the night and had at first thought it was a burglar. Eventually he realised it was Mabel.
Occasionally there have been sightings of a white figure in the bar and in the cottage next door. It is believed that the pub was once a private house and that the cottage next door was the servant’s quarters. There is a sad story associated with the house of a maid servant who fell in love with the squire’s son and became pregnant. When he found out he murdered her.
