The attractive little hamlet of Sewell can be found across the A5 from Houghton Regis. The only access by road is a small lane leading west off the A5 cutting at Chalk Hill north of Dunstable. Now an area dominated by old chalk quarry workings the Iron Age fortress of Maiden Bower can be found in the downs above Sewell.
Since the time of the Norman Conquest the name has changed very little as it was recorded as Sewelle in the Domesday Book.

Sewell Cutting
In 1988 the ‘Bedfordshire Magazine’ ran an article on an unusual photograph. A young man and his family were taking a walk through Sewell Cutting on the old Dunstable to Leighton Buzzard railway line. As with any family on a day out he was taking pictures of the area, now a nature reserve. When the film was developed there appeared a picture of a young woman in 1930’s style dress standing in front of a railway carriage window. The young man recalls that he did not take such a picture in the area and neither did any member of his family. The company who developed the film insist that a picture could not have been accidentally included from someone else’s film.
