A brief note about the area
The ghost of a former vicar

General

Streatley is a relatively modern village as it was originally just a series of scattered hamlets in a clearing by the street (the A6) hence its name (Old English stret and leah). Even though the name can be traced back to the Domesday Book as Stradli, Stradlei and Straillei, it really became a village in the second half of the nineteenth century. In the 2001 Census the parish population was 1,707.

The oldest building in the village is the church which primarily dates from the fourteenth century (though it does have a thirteenth century font) with additions in the fifteenth century. The church fell into ruin at least twice in its history (most likely due to the Enclosure Act, plague and agricultural depressions) and had to be restored.

St Margaret's Church

It is said that the churchyard at St Margaret's is haunted by the ghost of a former vicar. The Rev. James Haddow died over two hundred years ago and had been vicar for fifty nine years.
