A brief note about the area
The ghosts of two Cavaliers

General

Sutton consists of one street and is a small village that was given to the Burgoyne family by John o' Gaunt. The Burgoynes lived in the village until the family died out just before the Second World War. The village contains an excellent example of a mediæval packhorse bridge, and a ford.

The name quite simply means 'south farm' (Old English suth and tun). In the Domesday Book of 1086 the name is given as Sudrone. In the 2001 Census the parish population was 299.

Old Manor House

Two Cavaliers were at the Old Manor House in Sutton when the Roundheads arrived. They tried to escape through a tunnel which connected the house to the church (and possibly beyond) but, unfortunately for the Cavaliers, it seems the Roundheads knew of the passage and were waiting for the men as they exited. The Cavaliers were caught, executed and now their ghosts haunt the area.
