Thurleigh lies to the north of the county and has a population of 640. The village is a small compact one with groups of picturesque thatched, timber-framed cottages. The church of St Peter has a twelfth century tower and stands next to the remains of a mediaeval motte and bailey castle.
To the north lies Thurleigh airfield used by the United States during the Second World War and later by the Defence Research Establishment. Part of the airfield is now a business park.

Keysoe Road
Keysoe Road has its share of ghosts, all related to the time when it was the administrative quarters used by the 306th Bombardment Group of the US Air Force. Later the site became an RAF officer’s mess. Michael Cook was living in the mess whilst working for the Defence Research Agency. On numerous occasions he would hear footsteps outside his door after he had gone to bed. Every time he investigated there was no one there. When he talked about it with the other residents he was told “Oh yes! Didn’t you know that the mess is haunted by an America airman?”
One evening Michael was in the reading room. He watched, fascinated, as the door to the bedroom slowly opened then slowly closed by itself. Michael said that “the hairs stood up on the back of my neck”.

Thurleigh Airfield
The airfield has its share of ghosts, all related to the time when it was a wartime airfield occupied by the 306th Bombardment Group of the US Air Force. The site became part of the Royal Aircraft Establishment and because of this it was regularly patrolled by Ministry of Defence policemen. Patrols had repeatedly reported seeing wartime aircrew playing cards in a lighted hut. When they went round to the door to investigate they found the hut deserted and in darkness. One policeman, on patrol with his dog, spotted a man on a bicycle in the half-light of evening. The cyclist turned off towards a hanger so the policeman went round the other way to cut him off. But search where he might he could find no sign of the man or the bicycle.
