The name Cholesbury means 'Ceolweald's burh' and refers to a plateau-camp, locally known as The Bury (in Old English a burh was a fortification). The village's names have included Choulsbury, Choulesbury and anciently Chelwoldesbury. In the 2001 Census the population of the parish of Cholesbury-cum-St Leonards was 979.

Cholesbury Hillfort

This is rather an unusual one. It is said that on moonless nights a number of phantom pigs manifests on Cholesbury Hillfort. The pigs are small and have been heard fighting and snorting.
