General
Granborough is a small place but there are still moments of excitement. During the Second World War an American plane dropped a bomb in Church Lane which demolished the house of Mr. W. Newman the greengrocer and damaged a few others. As they say, with friends like those who need enemies.
The name drives from the Old English words grene and berg meaning ‘green hill’. It may be a small place but it has been around for a thousand years or more as it is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Grenesberga.

Granborough Lodge
At one time the house known as Granborough Lodge was the local vicarage to the church of St. John the Baptist. At that time it was said to be haunted by the ghost of a former vicar who had drowned whilst visiting Scarborough.
