Halton's largest claim to fame is probably the Royal Air Force base which is used to train the personnel for the Air Force of tomorrow and has done so for over eighty years. One of the buildings the RAF occupies is Halton House built by Baron Alfred de Rothschild in 1841.

The area has a long history with an Iron Age hillfort on Boddington Hill. The name derives from the Old English healh-tun and means ‘a farmstead in a corner of land'. The name has hardly changed since the time of the Domesday Book when it was recorded as Haltone. In the 2001 Census the parish population was 892.

Halton Camp

In the late 1960s a member of the WRAF was stationed at Halton. At that time the large base was divided into two sections, the main camp and a separate hospital. The base also had some three storey housing blocks. One WRAF member was living on the second floor of one block in what was a long and narrow room. One afternoon she was trying to get to sleep and was facing the wall against which her bed was placed. As she lay there she heard the door open and footsteps come towards her and then she felt as if someone was leaning over her as if looking to see if she was asleep. Not feeling in the mood for being disturbed she lay still and gave no sign that she was awake whilst waiting for them to leave. As she lay there she decided she should really see what they wanted and turned round, but there was no one there and she had not heard them leave.

In another incidence a different member of the WRAF was walking from the hospital to the housing blocks in the main part of the camp. When she was half way along the narrow path she thought she heard something but couldn't see anything. Over the next few minutes this happened several times as she walked along the path. Finally she looked around just as the sound was being made only to see a tall dark mass following her. At that point she ran as fast as she could without looking back. Prior to this incident there had been rumours of a strange dark shape that had been seen many times in the area.

Halton House

Now part of RAF Halton the house, in a French Chateau style, was originally built for Alfred de Rothschild and was completed in 1883 when it was known as Halton Mansion. Now it provides accommodation for RAF officers and conference facilities.

Over a hundred years later some of the guests who attended the parties held there still seem to be around. One of these is a man dressed for dinner in a top hat and tails who regularly walks across what was once the dining room. Legend has it that the man came to the original party with his fiancée but she chose to leave with another man, today he is said to return looking or his lost love.

Another ghost is referred to as the Graceful Lady. She has been seen by numerous officers and visitors and appears as a woman in Victorian clothes, replete with a magnificent hat, who walks down the stairs. A third ghost is said to be that of a Chinese laundry worker who hung himself in the lift tower. The man was a servant to Alfred Charles Rothschild but when Alfred died the servant was going to lose his job and in his depression he hung himself. Now he can be heard carrying on his duties.

A final paranormal occurrence involves the snooker table. At night the sound of laughter and of a game in progress have been heard by several officers staying in an adjoining room but each time they investigate the room is dark and there is no one there.

Local Hill

It is said that there is a hill near Halton which has an unusual property. If you leave your car on this hill it will roll uphill. What is even odder is that it is alleged that if you sprinkle talcum powder on the boot of your car and go away for a while when you return you will find handprints in the talc. It is said that these are the prints of a woman whose car broke down on the road some years ago and she was killed. What we find strange is how on earth was this oddity discovered? Why on earth would anyone sprinkle talcum powder on their car on the side of a road then walk off and leave it in the first place?

When we first heard of this story we were told it was Halton in Hertfordshire but there is no Halton in Hertfordshire but there is a Halton in Buckinghamshire which is only just over three kilometres from the county boundary so the reporter may have been confused as to which county Halton was in.
