General

According to the official guide Hambleden is one of the prettiest villages, in one of the Chiltern’s prettiest valleys. Lord Cardigan, famous for his part in the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava in 1854, was born in the seventeenth century manor house.

The name Hambleden comes from the Old English words hamel and dun and means ‘an irregularly shaped hill’. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the only difference between the village name and that of today is the addition of an ‘e’, Hambledene.
