General

The small village of Ley Hill lies to the east of Chesham. The village has a large common where golf has been played since 1900 and which is now used by Chesham and Ley Hill Golf Club. In the mid 1980s a large mediæval tile kiln was discovered which accounts for the names of some of the local features like Tyler's Hill and Kiln Lane. Ley Hill sits in the parish of Latimer which has a population of 1,021 as given in the 2001 Census.

The Swan

It is said that there are various tales associated with ghosts at the Swan Inn at Ley Hill, just to the east of Chesham, but no further details are currently available.

The original buildings which became the Swan were built in about 1520 and is reputedly one of the oldest pubs in Buckinghamshire. In 1680 it consisted of three timber-framed cottages. It has seen various uses over the years including the "Snug" being used as a sub post office during the Second World War. During the war Clark Gable and James Stewart were frequent visitors cycling over from Bovingdon airfield.
