General
The first part of the name Lillingstone Dayrell derives from the Old English Lytl-inga-stan and means ‘stone of the people of Lytel or Lytla’. The second part is the name of the family who held the manor. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the name is given as Lelinchestane.
Today the village consists of just a half-dozen properties but in the Middle Ages there was a sizeable community living there. To demonstrate this, the church (with an eleventh century nave) now lies isolated from the community with just the manor house for company. Originally the centre of the populated area was in a field called The Warren to the southwest of the church.

Manor Farm Cottages
The cottages adjoining Manor Farm at Lillingstone Dayrell have been subjected to numerous supernatural phenomena most of which has been experienced by several witnesses. These phenomena have included intensely cold spots which suddenly appear in the cottages irrespective of the season and outside temperature, the sound of footsteps on the gravel path outside the cottages in the dead of the night yet there is never anyone there and the sound of muffled voices again coming from outside the cottages. Many people have felt that they were being watched when they were in the cottages along with sudden feelings of depression and fear with no known cause. Luminous balls of light have been seen in the back gardens and residents keep having weird dreams.
