General
Medmenham lies along a road to nowhere. From the church of St Peter and St Paul, alongside the A4155, a narrow lane lined with attractive cottages and houses runs down to the river Thames and to nowhere else. Close to the river are the remains of a Cistercian Abbey which was dissolved by Henry VIII.
The name of Medmenham derives from the Old English words medume and hamm, and means ‘a middle-sized homestead’. At the time of the Domesday Survey it was called Medemeham. Its history dates back a long way as nearby there is an Iron Age hill fort called Bolbec’s Castle.

Danesfield Hotel
Today Danesfield House is a privately run hotel. When the building was being renovated one of the workmen was shocked to see footprints suddenly appear, especially shocking as they were on the ceiling. Shortly after the footprints appeared the building mysteriously caught fire and was extensively damaged. No cause could be found for the fire and it was eventually repaired. Then the footprints appeared for a second time and again the building mysteriously caught fire.

Medmenham Abbey
The grounds of Medmenham Abbey are haunted by a phantom woman wearing a light blue or grey gown. She is seen in the summertime at dusk on the bank of the Thames and appears to be searching for something. Some say that she appears as a glowing blue figure. The abbey itself is said to be haunted by the ghost of a maid.
Medmenham Abbey was once used by Sir Francis Dashwood as the first meeting place for his notorious Hellfire Club.
