General

You can tell that the area around Mursley was once well wooded as the name derives from a name plus the Old English word leah and means ‘Myrsa's wood/clearing'. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it is recorded as Muselai. In the 2001 Census the parish population was 602.

The village was once a market town, its royal charter was granted in 1230, but since then it has reduced enormously in size probably due to the bubonic plague in the seventeenth century.

Salden Pond

Legend has it that the pond at Salden, once a manor, now a farm to the north of the village, is haunted by a ghost that carries its head under its arm. He is said to appear on dark, stormy nights.
