The first part of the name Stoke Mandeville derives from the Old English word stoc, and means ‘outlying farmstead or hamlet’. The second part of the name, ‘Mandeville’, derives from the family of that name which held the manor in the thirteenth century. In the Domesday Book the name appears as Stoches.
Stoke Mandeville Hospital is renowned as an international centre for spinal injuries. For the past forty years the hospital has welcomed thousands of athletes for its annual wheelchair games.

Wendover Road
In July of 1979 John and Sheila Brown moved into a new house in Wendover Road. Mr. Brown was an airline pilot and was used to taking naps at odd times of the day but one nap turned out to be more odd than usual. It was mid-morning, a few months after they had moved in, and he was lying half asleep when he heard a deep sigh close behind him. At first he thought he’d done or dreamt it as he was dozing at the time. When it happened a second time a few weeks later he was not so sure he was the cause.
Around about the same time Sheila was climbing the stairs when she distinctly heard someone call her name. The voice sounded just like that of the previous owner, Mrs. Hunt, who they had bought the house off. A little while later John was talking with Mrs. Hunt who said that she had lived in the house for eight years with nothing unusual happening. When he asked her if she sighed a lot she admitted that her friends had told her that she did. This ghost was still alive.
