A brief note about the area
The ghost of a headless dog

General

The church, dedicated to St Mary Magdelene, has a very ancient clock in the church tower, but it has no face, therefore the time can only be heard and not seen by the people of Tingewick.

The name derives from Old English, being a persons name plus ing and wic and means ‘dairy farm or specialised farm of the people of Tida'. By the time of the Domesday Survey the name was Tedinwiche. Occupation of the area may date back quite a long way as there is a Roman villa near to the village. In the 2001 Census the parish population was 1,079.

In 1916 a tea party was being held at a cottage in the village of Tingewick. The event was attended by an ex-Scotland Yard inspector who was also an amateur photographer. When a picture he had taken was developed it revealed the ghost of a headless dog wagging its tail. The photographer claimed he saw nothing like it when he took the picture.
