General

The name Turweston derives from an Old Scandinavian personal name and the Old English word tun, thus ‘Thurulf's farm'. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it is spelt Turvestone. In the 2001 Census the parish population was 206 .

Just outside the village lies Turweston Airfield, now a dilapidated ruin but at one time home to Wellington Bombers of 12 and 17 OTUs (Operational Training Units) during World War II.

During the 1950s a phantom airman wearing a silk scarf was seen around Turweston Airfield. He is believed to have been a Second World War pilot and was last seen by the camp cook.
