General
The name Wheeler End refers to the Wheeler family, who lived there. The Wheeler's were once the main brewers of High Wycombe. The hamlet itself however is much older, dating back to the Anglo Saxon period.
Today Wheeler End is a collection of terraced and detached houses surrounding the village common. The Common and most of the arable land surrounding the properties in the hamlet are owned by the West Wycombe Estates of Sir Edward Dashwood. In the 2001 Census the population of Piddington and Wheeler End parish was 651.

Wheeler End Common
In 1766 a young woman named Anna from Lane End tragically fell ill and died just ten days before she was due to be married. Anna had a love for the colour red and a few years later a ghost, known locally as The Lady in Red, was seen wandering around the country paths in the Park Lane area near The Brickmakers' Arms. As the ghost wore red and red was Anna's favourite colour everyone assumed it was Anna's ghost. In the mid nineteenth century her ghost was regularly seen. It is also believed that she haunts Hanover Hill at nearby Bolter End.
The problem we have with this tale is the location. Anna came from Lane End and in Lane End there is a Park Lane but there is no Park Lane in Wheeler End, also there is a Brickmakers' Arms in Wheeler End but no Brickmakers' Arms in Lane End. Does Anna therefore wander both the Park Lane and Brickmakers Arms areas or has the tale become a bit mixed up over the years?
The location given is for Wheeler End Common directly opposite the Brickmakers' Arms.
