Rollright Investigation
Saturday 28th June 2008
In a field near to Little Rollright stands the ancient stone circle known as The King's Men. Nearby stands a large stone called The King Stone and across the field a dolmen known as The Whispering Knights.
The legend says that a there was once a King who desired to conquer all of England. He had travelled as far as the Rollrights when he was confronted by a witch. Some people claim she was Mother Shipton of Shipton-under-Wychwood (c.1488-1551). The legend continues by saying that she challenged the King with the following words -
Seven long strides shalt thou take
And if Long Compton thou canst see,
King of England thou shalt be.
The King set off shouting as he went -
Stick, stock, stone
As King of England I shall be known.
As he took his seventh stride the ground suddenly rose up in front of him in a long mound sometimes known as the Arch-Druid's barrow. The witch laughed and cried out -
As Long Compton thou canst not see
King of England thou shalt not be.
Rise up stick and stand still stone
For King of England thou shalt be none;
Thou and thy men hoar stones shall be
And I myself an eldern tree.
Thus it was that the King became the King Stone, his men the King's Men stone circle, and his knights the Whispering Knights.
It is also said that one day the spell will be broken whereupon the King and his men will return to life and continue with their conquest of England.
We will meet in the layby beside the road by the entrance to the site at 8pm. There is normally an admission charge of 50p but the hut at the entrance will be closed at that time. Nevertheless it would be nice if members left a donation through the apporiate slot in the hut as it helps to go towards the maintenance of the site.
