Ashbrook is a small hamlet just off the A602 to the southeast of Hitchin. Unfortunately we have been unable to find any information on Ashbrook, its origins and history. If anyone out there has any information then please let us know. In the 2001 Census the population of the Ashbrook ward was given as 3,124 but this includes places like Great Wymondley where the majority of the population reside.

A602

In 1910 Mr Harrison was taking a walk along the Hitchin to Stevenage road. As he walked up a hill on the way towards Hitchin he saw the ghost of a man dressed in white walking down the middle of the road as if he was looking for something.

Mill House

In an upper window of an old mill house the struggling figures of a man and a woman have been seen. Legend has it that the figures are those of the mill owner and a girl who lived at the mill with her mother. The owner had threatened to throw them out and the girl had gone to plead with him but there was a fight and the girl was killed.
