The name Aspenden derives from the Old English words aespe and denu and means ‘Aspen tree valley’. At the time of the Domesday Survey in 1086 the village was known as Absesdene.

Aspenden Hall

A number of years ago a nursemaid was walking the baby in the grounds of Aspenden Hall when an accident occurred. As she walked down a steep slope the pram slipped from her hands and rolled off down the hill. She tried to stop it but it got away from her and rolled into the pond where the baby was tipped out and drowned. Now when the nights are still you can hear the baby’s cries and the wailing of the nursemaid as she searches for her young charge.
