Borehamwood was originally a small rural hamlet and it was the construction of the Midland Railway and the opening of Elstree Station in 1868 that led to the expansion of the town.
Borehamwood has been called the ‘British Hollywood’ and today the town enjoys strong links with the British film industry. Elstree Studios is situated in the town centre and it is here that many TV shows are filmed, including ‘Eastenders’ and ‘Top of the Pops’. Elstree has also been responsible for many films including blockbusters like ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Saving Private Ryan’.

During the time it was occupied some of the contestants in the Big Brother house reported strange phenomena. These included a phantom monkey that was seen on the ceiling, a plate that moved by itself and a ghost that was seen by one contestant, Imogen, but that may have been another housemate.

Gate Studio
Borehamwood’s Gate Studios are said to be haunted by the ghost of a makeup artist who committed suicide in one of the offices and an employee who fell from one of the walkways in the roof of the area where cinema screens were made. In addition a man has been seen wearing 1920s style clothing.
One of the maintenance personnel saw the shadowy figure of a man out of the corner of his eye one morning. Whilst working in the cinema screen area he looked up and saw a man walk up a gangway and go behind a pile of foam. The maintenance engineer, Steve Oake, waited for the man to appear at the other side of the pile of foam but he didn’t. When Steve investigated he found the man had vanished.
Two other members of staff, Simon Jones and Dave Blake, were locking up one night when they saw a strange figure walk out from one corner of the building and exit through a doorway. Personal assistant Sue Carpenter has also seen a ghost, this time a man dressed in 1920s clothes who would have been alive when the building was first occupied in 1928.
