General
Caldecote is a tiny hamlet to the northeast of Stotfold yet it has a long history being mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Caldecota. The name, Caldecote, means Cold Cottage.
Today Caldecote is a cluster of cottages around the church in what is the smallest parish in the District. The church, now disused, is partly fourteenth century, partly Perpendicular.

Caldecote Manor
The manor house at Caldecote seems to be haunted by a violent ghost. In the late 1970s the housekeeper was attacked by the ghost and was lucky to have escaped serious injury. She was working alone in the house when she was violently pushed from behind which sent her headlong down the stairs. This wasn’t the only time this occurred. The housekeeper felt that there was something in the house that didn’t want her there. These violent attacks weren’t her only experiences as she once saw a lady dressed in black and heard strange noises coming from the cellar. An archaeologist working in the grounds during the early 1980s claimed to have had similar sightings.
