If you want to know more about Datchworth why not visit the museum on Datchworth Green. It is situated in an old blacksmith’s forge which contains the original forge and bellows. The museum tells the history of the village with many objects donated or lent by local people.

Datchworth appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Daceuuorde. The name derives from an Old English personal name and worth meaning ‘Daecca's enclosure’.

All Saints

One evening a lady was out walking her dog near All Saints church and decided to cut through the churchyard. As she entered she suddenly felt as if the atmosphere had become dark and oppressive. All around her she could hear a noise like ‘the chattering of a thousand monkeys’. Her dog felt it too as his hackles were raised and growling he fled the churchyard. It wasn’t until she had left the precincts of the church that the oppressive feeling went away. It is said that shadowy figures can be seen there at night.

Bury Lane

At a house in Bury Lane the woman who lives there and her family have often seen a dark shape rush past the back window but there is never anyone there. Her husband once saw an old man peering in through the same window but when he rushed outside the man was nowhere to be seen.

Hawkins Hall Lane

A little old lady dressed in black and bent with age is often seen shuffling down Hawkins Hall Lane. It is not until you see her from the front that you realise she isn’t bent with age but headless. She is often seen at evening time and seems to be heading somewhere with purpose but no one knows why. It is said that she may be the ghost of a woman who hanged herself with a piece of wire at a cottage in nearby Knebworth after the sudden death of her husband. If that is the case why has she chosen to haunt this particular spot?

Hollybush Lane

It is believed that a family that live in Hollybush Lane are haunted by a ghost that has appeared on numerous occasions. The ghost is a woman with long red hair and appears in bright clothing to the sound of tinkling bells. Sometimes she will be heard and not seen with the sound of her footsteps on the landing. No one has any clue as to who she is.

The house, where the haunting takes place, stands close to Pond House which has a pond and nearby moat. From here at least one body has been recovered in the past. During the middle ages workers’ cottages stood on the site so there are plenty of possibilities for the origins of the ghost.

Railway Station

It is alleged that in the area around Datchworth station can be heard the ghostly screams of a man who is supposed to be Walter Clibbon. Also a headless horse has been seen though it may not be associated with the highwayman. It is possible that these two tales may be being relocated as Clibbon’s haunts the area where he died around Bull’s Green to the south and the headless horse comes from Whitehorse Lane in Burnham Green. Both are only a few kilometres from Datchworth. It should also be noted that there isn’t and never was a Datchworth station (the nearest are Welwyn North and Watton-at-Stone).
