General
Elstree is a small town about one and a half kilometres west of Borehamwood. Even though Borehamwood has grown and practically swallowed Elstree the latter is the older of the two dating back to at least Roman times. The Roman road Watling Street passes through Elstree and the Roman settlement Sulloniacae is believed to have been located at Brockley Hill which lies a mile from Elstree village. The name derives from the Old English word treow meaning tree and a personal name giving ‘Tidwulf's tree’.
Elstree is important because of its links to the British film industry. Some of the world’s best known films and programs were made at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood including Star Wars and Saving Private Ryan.

The Hollybush
In the 1970s a ghostly figure of a bearded man was seen in the Hollybush public house. Footsteps were also heard around the building but there was never anyone there to have caused them.
It is strange that this tale is identical to the Hollybush at Church End, Redbourn so it may be that the location has been confused.

Waggon and Horses
The Waggon and Horses was once a coaching inn and something seems to think that it still is. On no less than three occasions someone travelling on the Elstree to Radlett road has seen a coach and horses standing opposite the Waggon and Horses. The traveller has seen a man dressed in jacket, knee breeches and a tri-cornered hat help a lady in grey down from the coach and across the road where they disappeared into the pub.
