General

The parish of Hormead encompasses Great and Little Hormead as well as Hare Street. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Horemede. The name derives from the Old English words horu and med and means ‘muddy meadow’.

Current village population is 356. Locally Great Hormead is famous for its Farmers Market which is held on the first Saturday of every month.

Brick House

Brick House is haunted by the ghost of a monk. In the late 1980s the monk was seen wandering in the churchyard as if he was looking for something. A local legend has it that a murder was committed in the vicinity of the haunting and the monk may in some way be associated with the killing.
