General
Hatching Green is most famous for Rothamsted Research which is, almost certainly, the oldest agricultural research station in the world. The centre was founded in 1843 when the owner of the Rothamsted Estate, John Bennet Lawes, appointed Joseph Henry Gilbert, a chemist, as his scientific collaborator. Lawes and Gilbert worked together for fifty seven years and they laid the foundations of modern scientific agriculture and established the principles of crop nutrition.
‘The mission of Rothamsted Research is to be recognised internationally as a primary source of first-class scientific research and new knowledge that addresses stakeholder requirements for innovative policies, products and practices to enhance the economic, environmental and societal value of agricultural land.’

Agdell Path
Agdell Path runs from Pimlico Place to Agdell Cottage, Hatching Green, past a field which is now part of the Rothamsted estate. In this field there was a dell known as Hagdell where a woman of local legend, Ann Weatherhead, used to live. Ann is now said to walk this path as well as appearing at Harpenden Common and Rothamsted Manor. So frequent were the sightings of Ann’s phantom that young girls would not go near the area alone after dark. The schoolmaster at Rothamsted was also convinced about the path’s ghostly reputation.
