Ghostly soldiers who kill one of their own

Hertford Heath is not really a village unto itself but more the merging of two, Hertford Heath and Little Amwell.

The Catuvellauni tribe had a settlement there before the Romans invaded in 54 BC. A Belgic grave dating from about 40 to 50 AD and early Iron Age pottery was found when builders were digging the foundations for garages in Trinity Road.

During the plaque years Queen Elizabeth I moved parliament to Hertford so that regal dignitaries would have had to travel across the heath. Dick Turpin is also alleged to have frequented the area in the eighteenth century.

Haileybury College

Haileybury College lies to the southwest of Hertford Heath in an area surrounded by woodland and playing fields. In the late 1970s a man was taking his dog for a walk in the area when he suddenly became aware of the sound of dogs yelping as if in pursuit of something. The next instant a large number of soldiers stepped out of the undergrowth and moved towards him. Terrified of what was about to happen the man stood rooted to the spot but the troops stopped and then proceeded to kill one of their comrades.

The man was understandably shaken by what he had seen and decided to investigate the history of the area. He discovered that a troop of Cromwell’s soldiers had once marched along the road where the event occurred. The records also revealed that a man was killed in the spot where he had encountered the troops.
