General
Hertingfordbury is a small village with only 237 residents which is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Herefordinberi. The name is derived from the Old English words ingas and burh meaning ‘fortification of the people of Hertford’.
St. Mary’s church dates back to 1400 and it contains the tomb of Lady Anne Calvert, an ancestor of the original founders of Hertingfordbury Park. The park is featured in Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice and was visited by the diarist John Evelyn (1620-1706).

Old Rectory
This one is more for the UFOlogists than for the ghost hunter. It is reported that a shining silver sword was seen in the sky in 1643. The sword was observed hanging near the old rectory but no further details are available.
