General
Hertingfordbury is a small village with only 212 residents (as given in the 2001 Census) which is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Herefordinberie. The name is derived from the Old English words ingas and burh meaning ‘fortification of the people of Hertford'.
St Mary's church dates back to 1400 and it contains the tomb of Lady Anne Calvert, an ancestor of the original founders of Hertingfordbury Park. The park is featured in Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice and was visited by the diarist John Evelyn (1620-1706).

Old Rectory
This one is more for the UFOlogists than for the ghost hunter. It is reported that a shining silver sword was seen in the sky over Hertingfordbury on 10th March 1643. It was observed hanging near the old rectory. It appeared about 11pm and stayed until 1am and was described as being a shining cloud in the air with a shape resembling a sword. In addition it was said to be as bright as the moon.
