The site on which Kings Langley stands has been occupied from Roman times when a small community was established. The Langley aspect of the name means ‘long wood/clearing’ and comes from the Old English words lang and leah. In the Domesday Book the name is given as Langelei.

Edmund de Langley, the first Duke of York and fifth son of Edward III, was born in the Royal Palace in 1341. His tomb and that of his first wife Isabel of Castile is can be found in All Saints Church.

In 1349 Edward III used the Royal Palace as his seat of government during the Black Death. Unfortunately the palace no longer exists. The town held an important royal prerogative, the right to fly the Royal Standard, until 1935

The current population of the town is almost 6,000.

A spectral car wreck appears on the Watford bypass at Kings Langley and serves as a warning to motorists. The car has been seen several times and has caused numerous drivers to stop to go to the aid of the victim(s) only to discover that the car (a family saloon) has vanished. So far the badly damaged car has only been seen at night.

Chipperfield Road

At a specific point along the road from Kings Langley to Chipperfield people with psychic abilities have felt very uneasy and extremely cold. Late one night a man was returning from Chipperfield after visiting a friend at the Chipperfield art colony. He was forced to walk as there was no bus at that time of night. As he walked he suddenly felt his scalp prickling and a feeling of intense cold. This was just at one spot because the feelings went as he walked on. It appears that similar experiences have been had at that particular location since the Second World War. The exact spot is unknown.

Kings Langley Priory

It is said that two friars dressed in white robes can be seen digging up the ground in the Priory orchard on a particular night in summer. No one knows why they are there or what it is they are searching for.
