During World War II Leavesden Aerodrome was an important centre for aircraft production. Now the former Rolls-Royce site is the home of Leavesden film studios where the James Bond film ‘Goldeneye’ and ‘Star Wars Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace’ were filmed. Other feature films have included ‘Sleepy Hollow’ and ‘Onegin’ which required the construction of old St Petersburg on a back lot.

Leavesden Aerodrome

The ghost of an RAF corporal haunted the area where he died accompanied by the sounds of rattling chains. In 1941 Leavesden Aerodrome was being battered by gale force winds when the RAF corporal tried to open the doors of number 2 hanger. The door was operated by a chain which was attached to a ratchet and as he tried to open it an especially strong gust of wind blew it down on top of him. Later, on windy nights, his ghost walked the area around the hanger and the chains, which had long gone, were still heard.

Now the aerodrome is no more and even the hangers which used to back onto the main road have gone. Instead film studios occupy the site.
