Lemsford is a small village with a population of only 188. It used to be famous for its watercress and one of the commercial watercress beds now forms the Lemsford Springs nature reserve which is owned and managed by the Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust. Here you will find hides for bird watching and paths which lead through Brocket Park to Ayot Greenway.

Brocket Hall

The ghost of the poet Lord Byron has been seen wandering in the grounds of Brocket Hall almost as if he is looking for poetic inspiration. His funeral procession has also been seen going slowly past the gates in front of the hall. The area is also said to be haunted by the ghost of Lord Palmerston, once Prime Minister.

In 2001 the pop group Steps were recording a video at Brocket Hall and experienced paranormal phenomena. Objects would move by themselves and in certain areas the air was felt to be icy cold.

Brocket Hall is now a golf complex and is still the residence of Lord and Lady Brocket. The hall was once the home of Lady Caroline Lamb who was once the lover of Lord Byron. The hall has been used many times as backdrops for television programmes and films particularly the excellent ‘Night of the Demon’ filmed in the late 50s and based on M. R. James’ story ‘Casting the Runes’.
