A brief note about the area
The ghost of a murder victim

General

Long Marston, with its population of 509 residents, is a typical Chilterns village being centred on a cross-roads. The village contains a mediaeval church but all that now remains is the west tower hidden amongst trees. The current church, built in the nineteenth century, was constructed without a tower, possibly because one already existed locally. The new church contains features of the old with a fifteenth century screen and seventeenth century pulpit.

Astrope Lane

On April 22nd 1751 Ruth Osborne and her husband were brutally murdered after Ruth was accused of being a witch (see the Gubblecote entry for the full story).

The pond where Ruth met her end was said to have been in a field off Astrope Lane in Long Marston which people would avoid after dark in case they met her ghost.
