The area around Mardleybury has been settled since mediaeval times with both documentary evidence and local earthworks.

The Manor at Mardleybury dates from the seventeenth century. Now the village consists of a few houses around one of the few village ponds that can be found in the area. Mardleybury Pond is one of the few bodies of water in this area as Mardleybury occupies a dry valley.

Mardleybury Manor

In Mardleybury Manor the smell of incense drifts around the house but no one has lit any. In addition the sounds of heavy breathing can be heard along with crunching sounds and bangs. The house is also haunted by a ghost who will move objects and throw clothes around. One owner of the house found a headscarf on the bed but no one knew where it had come from and no one there owned such a scarf.

Workmen had stacked heavy flooring ready to be laid and were rather surprised when it later laid itself especially as it had taken two of them to lift it. A cleaner who worked at the house had seen pictures fall off walls and things moving around by themselves.

Mardleybury Pond

Mardlebury Pond is said to be haunted by the ghost of a young woman wearing grey who appears near the pond, especially to lone travellers. Many a motorist has been startled by her sudden appearance in front of them which has caused them to brake on the sharp bend just before the pond. One man from Welwyn was driving near the end of Whitehorse Lane when the woman appeared. He veered sharply to try to avoid her, went off the road and hit a tree. Of course there was no one there when he looked back. He described the woman as having long hair and wearing a flowing gown or cloak.

Legend has it that the ghost is that of a woman who lived at the Manor in the eighteenth century. She was returning home from a party when the coach driver took the bend in the road just before the Manor too fast and overturned the coach. The woman was thrown from the coach into the icy waters of the pond where she drowned.
