The area around Waterford is full of Bronze Age (1800 to 600BC) remains including pottery from gravel pits to the north of Ware. At Waterford Bronze Age artefacts have also been found revealing that the village has a long and ancient history.

The road from Hertford to Stevenage is used quite regularly by a Hertford woman going to visit her mother in Stevenage. The woman says that she regularly sees the ghosts of people long since departed who line the road or who are working in the fields. In the centre of Waterford she has seen a man wearing a floppy hat and dressed in 1940s style khaki coloured clothes.

High Road

A young woman was living at 46 High Road in Waterford in the early 1970s when she saw two ghosts. The first sighting happened one night when she awoke to find a beautiful young woman standing over her. The apparition was wearing a long white dress and had long blonde hair. She stood for several minutes smiling in a warm and friendly way before disappearing into a wall. The ghost bore a striking resemblance to that seen by Mr. Ivor Childs outside the church of St Michael and All Angels in Waterford. A local legend tells of a young woman who drowned in the River Beane where it ran through the back garden of the house.

The second apparition appeared some months later but this time it was of an old woman dressed it what appeared to be Victorian clothes. This time the ghost left by the door.

St Michael and All Angels

On a bright, moonlit, night Mr. Ivor Childs was driving through Waterford accompanied by his wife and sister-in-law. As they approached the church a figure wearing a long white flowing garment suddenly appeared from the churchyard and moved towards the road. Worried that he might hit the woman Mr. Childs slowed down but his wife cried out ‘don’t stop, don’t stop, it’s a ghost’. Mr. Childs did stop after he had passed the church and was in time to see the figure glide across the road into the recreation ground where it disappeared. All three occupants of the car saw the apparition which Mr. Childs described as being bareheaded with beautiful hair and features.
