BBC Three Counties Radio Investigation

13th July 2004

LPS members were asked to go and investigate the local radio station on Regent Street as staff there had been experiencing paranormal phenomenon. We were taken into the radio station and told of some of the history of the location. Back in the 50s the site used to be home to a co-op with flats above it and some cottages. There are rumours that there was also a murder during this time. Before the radio station it was believed to be offices. We were introduced to Jenna the receptionist who has seen the apparition of a lady in the reception area. Jenna saw the apparition through the glass pane in the door. She described her as 40-45 with blonde hair and thought to be wearing a skirt. No particular period dress was noticed. When Jenna went through to the reception desk, there was no one there. Both doors are locked and not accessible without a member of staff. She has also had the feeling of being followed on the ground floor hallway.

We were then taken to the three main locations in the building where strange occurrences have happened, the Reception Area, the Ground Floor Hallway and the Cellar. We then split into small groups, each staying half an hour in each location. Each group had a member of staff with them. They talked over what we were doing, discussed our findings and made an audio recording of all the events that had taken place including results from photographs, video footage and temperature and humidity readings. There were some very interesting results from all teams. Noises were heard. Lights were seen and cold spots felt. We all regrouped back in the office area to compare our findings. There were some similarities between experiences and also some differences. Group reports should be available soon.

It was an excellent location to investigate. Lesley and the BBC staff were very inviting and helpful throughout the evening. I think all members wouldn’t hesitate to re-investigate if they were asked. Is it haunted? Well, from staff accounts and the strange things going on there, it just might be.

Following on from this investigation a medium was invited to investigate the station on 20th July. LPS President Andrew Fazekas attended as an observer to watch the medium at work. In the reception area she described the spirit of a woman in her 70 VSO’s who had lived on the site hundreds of years ago and was a cleaner with five children and black hair in a bun. In the corridor she encountered one of Cromwell’s soldiers who had been shot in the chest and still visits the area. We visited a nearby studio where she encountered the spirit of a man in his 50’s who was a clerk married to a hat maker. It seems he never had a day off work sick only to die of a heart attack. Lastly in the basement the group used dowsing tools to find the location of a possible well and ley lines. In the meeting afterwards the group were sure the site had once been used as a pub and had a well. Only historical archives will provide the truth.
