Derby Gaol Investigation
9th April 2005
On April 19th LPS members were joined by Norwich Paranormal Experience Group to investigate the reputedly haunted Derby Gaol. Housing prisoners since 1756, the gaol was responsible for the execution of fifty-eight of its prisoners. Their crimes ranging from picking pockets to murder. Our host, CJ, told the group a little about the gaol and members had a chance to look around the gaol’s cells and museum area.
We then split into groups with NPEG for the night’s investigation. Each group spent an hour in a haunted location while one group remained in the control room. An infra-red camera was also set up in the corridor, which has reported ghostly activity. The night produced some interesting occurrences for each group. Flashes of light and light anomalies were caught on camcorders and were being seen by members with the naked eye, in the haunted cells where the prisoners were kept. Orbs were caught on cameras in the cells and corridor, the noise of a chain being pulled was heard in the exhibition area and people had the feeling of being touched/tickled in the cells and the exhibition area. Batteries and camcorders were failing to work properly although fully charged beforehand.
Most groups also reported strange EMF readings in the cells. Some of this was due to electrical wiring on opposite sides of the cell walls but some readings went off the scale in the middle of the room then dropped to zero and the energy sometimes seemed to be moving around the cells. Especially in areas where checks were made for sources of natural energy and none were found. After the group vigils, members tried table tilting and Ouija boards to try communicating with spirits. These methods did produce some interesting results. Many thanks to Tracy Monger and the rest of NPEG for joining LPS on this investigation and making it a successful and enjoyable night.
