Mardelybury, Datchworth and
Watton-at-Stone Investigation
1st June 2007
General:
This was an extra event which we decided to hold as one of our members wished to return to a previously investigated site, Mardleybury Pond, as the last time we were there he obtained some interesting sound recordings.
We met on Datchworth Green at 8pm before going on to Mardleybury Pond for the first part of the investigation. After this we stopped at All Saints church in Datchworth for a while where several of our members have experienced unusual phenomena and we now have two people who have seen something that couldn't have been there.
The evening ended at St Andrew and St Mary’s church in Watton at Stone as the area around the church is haunted by a grey lady. The ghost is believed to be that of a young woman who threw herself from the church tower when she was spurned in love.
Mardleybury Pond:
Nothing picked up at Mardleybury Pond.
Datchworth, All Saints:
When sitting on the first bench from the main church door, I observed a dark shape move from left to right on the church door. It started at the middle of the door and moved towards the wall. It was roughly two-thirds the height of the door and did not cast a shadow on the ground.
If something was to cast a shadow on the door it would have to move in front of the flood light on the grass opposite, but nothing had crossed the path of that as the light coming from it was not disturbed when I saw the shadow. This was during the vigils and I did not see anyone walking around (the area was well lit)
Watton-at-Stone, St Andrew’s:
After walking round the church I walked up a shallow grassy rise where there was gap in tall hedges that lead to the road. I turned around and took a picture and could hear someone walking along the road towards the gap in the hedges where I was standing. What I heard was a noise like a rustling rain mac and footsteps on the tarmac as well as leaves and crunching of the vegetation. I was convinced that it was someone from the house opposite come to see what we were doing there. I moved back down the slope, turned around and could still hear the noise briefly then it stopped and no one appeared. I reported this to Bill who went up through the gap to the road but could find no one around. I did not see anyone throughout the experience and noted that the sounds that were made by Bill walking the area were the same as what I had heard. The night was calm with very little wind and I am sure that this could not have produced the sounds that I heard. I feel the church and this area warrants further investigation.
