Sopwell House Investigation
7th September 2007
General:
For our event early in September we travelled down to St Albans to visit and investigate the site of the old Sopwell Nunnery. On the site stands the remains of a Tudor mansion built in 1560 by Sir Richard Lee, a soldier and royal engineer. The house was built on the site of the nunnery which dated back to 1140 so the area has a long history.
We met up at 20:00 on the site and had soon set up to do video recordings and sound recordings before having a walk round te site then starting the first of three vigils. We concluded the evening with a séance in the southernmost room of the house which was interrupted half way through by a very friendly, fuss-loving Old English Sheep dog and his master out for their night-time walk. The dog's owner informed us that he walks there virtually every night and had never noticed anything 'unusual' but that in itself is not unusual as few people have paranormal experiences.
Initial Walkround:
At the back of the house Steph feels something press in to her upper left arm.
In the room on the far right (when looking at the house from the front) Steph has a swaying sensation then a feeling of falling a long way down.
Vigil 1:
Open area at the rear left of the house - 20:45 to 21:15
Temperature 14°C.
20:55 Andy feels drawn to look towards a corner of the building that has access to a door. Feels someone is standing there but has no visual sighting.
21:06 Steph sees a blue/white flash of light on the grass in the corner where Andy was drawn to earlier.
Vigil 2:
Behind the stone semi-circle at the rear right of the house - 21:20 to 22:20
21:30 Andy's hair stands on end. Temperature drop to Andy’s left from 51°F to 48°F
21:45 Andy and Steph hear a sound of stone falling on stone. Possibly from loose stones at the area at the back of the house.
Vigil 3:
22:30 to 23:00
Temperature 10°C
Nothing else to report.
Seance:
Steph feels similar swaying as before the vigils.
Andy does not feel anything.
Post Investigation:
Steph's photographs show nothing unusual. Nothing unusual on Dictaphone recordings.
Andys Dictaphone recordings still to be analysed, however there were orbs and a light anomaly on some photographs.
Initial Observation:
When we arrived at Sopwell Andy and Steph were already on the site setting up. At 20:10 as we approached the ruin across the grass Leana got the impression of a woman near to a gate which stands in a wall 60m to the north-northeast. She said that the woman was walking into the garden area; she was in her mid-30s, was wearing a long dress and had shoulder length hair which was tied up but had come loose at the front (it was not supposed to be like that).
Before we started the vigils we explored the site and were over near what appears to be an ice-house to the east of the man house. As we stood in a group Steph reported that she had felt a prod on the upper part of her left arm, it was not one of us.
Vigil 1:
20:38 to 21:10
Leana and I positioned ourselves in what is the furthest south room of the house, facing north. I had set up my video camera (infra-red) to record through the two doorways which link the rooms and which stand on the eastern edges of the rooms. The temperature at the start varied from +11.5 to 12°C on the ground to 14.5 to 15.5°C on the house walls, this did not change during the vigil. Nothing was sensed or seen during this vigil.
Vigil 2:
21:22 to 22:22
For this vigil we positioned ourselves just to the south of the gateway where Leana had sensed the woman and did a 30 minute video recording of the gate (infra-red).
22:02 I saw a spot of light on the east wall of the house. It was fairly large and blue-white in colour. It was positioned in a shadow which could be discerned on the wall, being the second shadow from a wall which runs orthogonal to the house. Later investigation revealed that the first shadow is a window so the light would have been on the south side of the door (the second shadow) which runs through the wall at this point. Later comparison of results revealed that Steph had seen a similar light in the same place during her vigil in the garden. That part of the wall is in a position where car headlights from the nearby road (nearly 120m away) can not shine.
22:11 A bright spot of light was seen by myself on the bushes mid-way down the opposite wall. This wall runs orthogonal to the house and on the opposite side of the garden area. A few seconds later a fast moving bright light was seen moving from approximately the position of the first light and towards the ice-house at the east end of the wall.
22:30 Leana saw a spot of light on the trees to the south (beyond the dividing wall and the ice-house). It was stationary and appeared to flash three times quickly then it vanished. It was brighter than the plane lights that are clearly visible in the area and, unlike the planes, it was not moving.
Vigil 3:
22:30 to 23:00
For this vigil we sat in the room just north of the first room we occupied.
22:56 Leana got the impression of a little boy hiding around the corner of the door to the south and peering round the west jamb. He was about eight years of age and around 1.2m tall. He had short dark-brown hair, almost black.
