Someries Castle Investigation

4th April 2008

Part of the old place standeth yet.
It is set on a hill, not far from St Anne’s Hill.

These words written by Henry VIII’s Historian, Thomas Leland, around five hundred years ago give you an idea as to the historical significance of the remains of Someries Castle. Although the castle is now no more than an earthwork, the structure of its gatehouse and chapel are still standing with some of its original features.

Someries Castle was built in the 1440s by Sir John Wenlock and is a scheduled Ancient Monument. Sir John Wenlock’s ghost has been reportedly seen in the grounds and LPS made a return visit to investigate his sighting and other strange phenomena experienced at Someries Castle.
