Gallows Hill and Beacon Hill Investigation

22nd August 2008

In August 2008 LPS ventured the heights of Gallows Hill. Its neighbouring Beacon Hill, more commonly known as the Ivinghoe Beacon, was once used as an Iron Age Hill Fort. The reason for an investigation at ‘Gallows’ Hill is self explanatory from its name. This high point would have provided a good view of the hanging bodies of convicted criminals to any passers by and warm them of the consequences of breaking the law in the area. It is known that at least one man who was hung there, the highwayman Jack the Leather, has come back from the dead as his ghost haunts nearby Edlesborough.
